Juanita Rockwell
Juanita Rockwell is an award-winning playwright, librettist, lyricist, songwriter and director of new work in new forms, with over 100 projects worldwide including plays with and without songs; audioplays; chamber opera; puppetry; dance theater; gamelan opera; translation/adaptation; site-specific performance; and multi-author collaborations. She lives in Baltimore and her work has appeared in such venues as The Ontological, Culture Project, Bushwick Starr, Mabou Mines/Suite (NYC); Atlas Theatre, Source Festival, Theatre of the First Amendment (DC) Everyman, Iron Crow, Single Carrot, Theatre Project (Baltimore) City Theatre (Pittsburgh) Auditòrio Simòn Bolivar (São Paulo, BR) RS9 (Budapest, HU) and National Public Radio.
Support includes the Marion International Fellowship; Baltimore’s Ruby Artist Project Award; National Endowment for the Arts; Fulbright; Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award in Playwriting; and artist residencies including Djerassi, Ucross, Playa, The Studios at Key West, Wildacres, and the KO Festival of Performance.
She was Founding Director of Towson University’s Theatre MFA, a self-directed laboratory for original performance; and as Artistic Director of Hartford’s Company One Theater in the 1990s, directed dozens of early premieres by leading experimental playwrights. She earned her MFA in Theatre from the University of Connecticut, Storrs, and her BS in Semiotics and Theatre, Phi Beta Kappa, from Colorado College.
